Having enjoyed The Eve of St Eligius, I made an effort to get hold of the second 'Eldritch collection', Wish Man's Wood. However I was disappointed to find that a male perspective was taken most of the time. Defilement was perfectly horrible in this respect.
This is not supposed to be a pleasant story. It is, as you rightly say, HORRIBLE. What makes it horrible is not so much what happens but the 19c attitudes portrayed. I am talking here about the attitude of the female protagonist quite as much as her repulsive husband. Thank goodness we live in the twenty-first century.
